The Medal of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas is awarded to honour persons for distinguished services to Lithuania and is usually conferred on February 16.
Since the restoration of the Independent State of Lithuania 409 persons, Lithuanian citizens and foreign nationals, have been honoured with different classes of the Medal.
The Medal of the Order was instituted in 1930. The same design of the badge of the Medal, which was created by sculptor Jonas Burba, is used today.
The first badges of the Medal of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas were produced at the Vilnius Artworks' Association in 1994. At present they are struck at the Mint of Lithuania.
